A Visitor Book
I like the idea that family homes used to have “Visitor Books”. They are a wonderful resource for historians.
If I had started one at the start of 2009, my visitors would have written the following.
10/01/2009 Danielle and her brother, Simon: Came to collect the last of my stuff. Frosty atmosphere. Tea was excellent. Won’t come again.
14/01/2009 British Gas: Came to read meter. Frosty atmosphere. Will have to come again.
20/01/2009 Southern Electric: Came to read meter. Unfriendly.
07/04/2009 British Gas: Came to read meter. Still frosty atmosphere.
13/04/2009 Southern Electric: Came to read meter. Just as unfriendly.
14/05/2009 Horse Woman: Silly idea to come, didn’t even get a cup of tea.
07/06/2009 John the handyman: Fitted a new kitchen. Tea was good. I’m not interested in cricket.
There you have it, six months in the busy social life of Robert Mumford. I defy a future historian to get a PhD out of this one.
